SotHR is cited by the devs as one of their chief inspirations for Battle Brothers, so that kind of says it all right there. It's not on Steam sadly, though it is available at GOG, I believe. The other old game I can wholeheartedly recommend is Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat. It also has the best character generation mechanic I have ever seen. You don't cast spells but you can make alchemal potions and you can pray to saints for aid. If we're firing-up the wayback machine, I can strongly recommend two very old games:Īn increadible game from the ms-dos era if you can get past the dated graphics, it's a great open world RPG set in medieval Germany as the medieval Germans saw it - you control a group of four adventurers who are seeking fame and fortune and who must deal with demons and monsters prowling the countryside in addition to bandits and thugs. also it is more of a modern setting with gun battles rather than medieval battles.
